Made possible with funding and staff from The Bass; realized within my responsibilities as Chief Curator of The Bass
A monograph with contributions by writers and thinkers who consider the work of Hernan Bas from a range of perspectives, and position it within a lineage of art historical figures and critical discourses. Kevin Brazil explores the overlapping sensibilities between queer aesthetics and Bas’s work; art historian and critic Isabelle Graw conducts a wide-ranging and vastly illuminating conversation with the artist; Liz Munsell examines Bas’s work within the legacies of Latinx, Latin American, and Caribbean art; Blake Oetting uncovers the conceptual art practices underlying much of the artist’s work from the early days to The Conceptualists; and The Bass’s Chief Curator James Voorhies analyzes Bas’s art within a history of painting.
Commissioned for the book, these contributions offer the most concentrated collection of criticism on the artist to date, providing new and exciting knowledge on and ways into the work of Hernan Bas.
